ALBANY FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HOSTS

FIRST CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY KIDS COLLEGE

By Linda Waggener, CU feature writer

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Kids College, a program for young people offered each summer by Campbellsville University, was taken on location for the first time this summer to Clinton County's Albany First Baptist Church.

Dr. Carol Peddicord, Albany physician and associate trustee on Campbellsville University's Board, was instrumental in getting the Kids College organized in her hometown. “Our goal,” she said, “is to make Christian education more attainable and more desirable for the rural community, and I think this was a great start!”

Thirty students from Clinton, Wayne and Cumberland Counties chose two topics from the following sessions at the June 22-25 Kids College: cooking, art, science, history, first aid, Spanish, geography, music and physical education.

Carol Sullivan, director of the Technology Training Center at CU, said, We design all the classes and select instructors to enable students to broaden the scope of interests and interact with other outstanding young people.

Peddicord said that she was grateful to Sullivan and her staff for providing Christian education in Albany through Kids College.

She said she was also proud of the people of Albany First Baptist who not only provided lunches for the students and staff, but some instructors as well, including Lisa Beard, Kathy Conner, Kara Conner and Michael Peddicord.

Reviews were positive for all of the eight course options, especially science, cooking and art, which Sullivan proudly noted, was taught by renowned local artist Fred Thrasher. The Albany Kids College is already under discussion for next summer.

“On behalf of Campbellsville University, we would like to express appreciation to Dr. Carol Peddicord for all of the work she has done in making the Albany Kids College a reality,” said John E. Chowning, vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president. “Her dedication to the children and youth of her community are exemplary.

“We would also like to express appreciation to Rev. Jeffrey A. Brown, pastor of Albany First Baptist Church, and his congregation for hosting the Kids College.  The church staff and members were most helpful and hospitable in every facet of this experience,” Chowning said.

For information about future camps, contact the Campbellsville University Technology Training Center at 270-789-5400 or 270-789-5392. Scholarships are available for special needs on a limited, first come basis.

Kids College graduate Bode Copeland asked Director Carol Sullivan, "So, aren' we supposed to have caps and gowns?" After she explained that Kids College grads got yellow t-shirts instead, he asked, "how did you know the right sizes to get?" And after she answered that, Bode had more questions. Thats what Kids College encourages. (CU Photo by Linda Waggener)
